The U.S. Air Force needed to assess contamination in locally-harvested subsistence foods, salmon and trout in local streams, and wetland areas of the former King Salmon Air Force Station, Alaska.
OASIS conducted evaluations of potential contamination of the human food chain, aquatic biota, and wetlands. In addition, the multidisciplinary OASIS team developed and implemented a detailed work plan and sample design for assessments. The scope of work included: 1) field collection of edible berries and mushrooms growing at five sites that are potentially used by local residents for subsistence activities; 2) evaluation of contamination levels in soil, sediment, and surface water in wetland areas at the sites; 3) field collection and laboratory evaluation of contaminants in silver salmon fry, rainbow trout, bivalves and other aquatic invertebrates found in creeks; 4) characterizing and mapping the wetlands and other ecological communities that occupy each site; 5) delineating the boundaries of wetlands and upland areas based upon Clean Water Act Section 404 definitions; and 6) identifying unique or special habitats at each site.
The results of this project were used to develop remedial design options and to identify potential mitigation alternatives.
