The State of Alaska Department of Transportation needed an Environmental Assessment (EA) prior to building a proposed road to connect the villages of Toksook Bay, Nightmute, and Tununak.
As a subcontractor, OASIS delineated the wetlands in accordance with the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual and mapped vegetative communities along a 30 mile right-of-way for the proposed road. Data generated for the field effort was used in ESRI’s ArcGIS® 9 to map portions of the route not directly ground-truthed. GIS was used to generate information assisting in the selection of a proposed alternative, including total acreage of wetlands crossed per road section. Wetland function and values were assessed for the ROW by adapting the New England Army Corps of Engineers Highway Supplement Manual to address specific conditions in the study area.
Information gathered enabled seamless generation of that portion of the EA.
