ENSCO, a global offshore drilling company, needed flexible environmental management systems to allow business units around the world to fulfill regulatory and cultural expectations. Influenced by different customer requirements and local conditions, the client's corporate office wanted assurance that baseline requirements were being met and the environment protected in all locations in which its rigs operate.
OASIS assessed the status of environmental management capability in North/South America, Europe/Africa, and Asia Pacific/Australia regional business units. Information was then used to help corporate environmental staff develop a strategy, prioritize resources, and develop an action plan for ISO 14001 environmental management systems worldwide. Technical implementation assistance was provided to identify and track legal requirements, write procedures, and provide on-rig training sessions in priority operating areas.
Work performed by OASIS allowed for a coordinated evaluation and strategy regarding third-party certification of individual business unit ISO 14001 environmental management systems. As a result, several ENSCO locations chose to certify their systems through accredited registration bodies, providing assurance that program are in place to address environmental issues and continually improve performance. In addition, managers from locations around the world benefited from information sharing that helped increase environmental management knowledge at all levels of the company.
