Teck Cominco Environmental Management System (EMS) Design, Implementation, and Training

Issue:

Teck Cominco, a Canadian mining company, wanted an integrated environmental and information management program for its flagship property, Red Dog Operations. The client needed a site-specific, flexible solution that satisfied corporate guidelines, international standards, and regulatory stakeholders.

Solution:

In a cooperative effort with Red Dog staff, OASIS undertook a site-wide analysis of environmental issues and controls in place to mitigate environmental risks. OASIS led the development of a customized information management application to address environmental compliance and permit task tracking, document control, and performance data, giving Red Dog managers a single dashboard view of environmental responsibilities in their areas of operation. OASIS guided the EMS implementation from concept to completion, interacting with all departments on the property as well as two key contractors for the operation. OASIS provided staff augmentation and project management services and employee training throughout the engagement.

Results:

Red Dog Operations achieved certification of its ISO 14001 environmental management system ahead of Teck Cominco corporate expectations, and continues to improve the management system by integrating health and safety elements into the information management system. The customized information management application was designed to be scalable, and is now being installed at other Teck Cominco properties.
